Mikailah Thompson is an honored Nez Perce tribal member. She writes, "Traditionally, glass beads were used during the 18th and 19th centuries amongst the Nimiipuu. Colors like blue and red were commonly used, resembling the sky and warriors' blood. Once wampum shells and brass became available, they held monetary value throughout the Columbia Plateau."
